The country side sure was a beautiful sight to behold. After having travelled through the countryside, hopelessly looking for clues to finding any kind of solution to the plague that was constantly claiming more and more of her good health, Astra had come to the Kunugi district. There were fields as far as the eye could see, and there was absolutely nothing which stopped her from pillaging. Apples, melons, potatoes. Fortune had it, that many were seeking security, answers and safety, so there wasn't much competition for food out here. Astra herself, was found on a field of trees, munching and gorging on apples. The girl was wearing a blackened Valkyrie armor, and she seemed utterly malnurished. Thinner than she had ever been, she also had a pair of blackened rings from exhaustion around her eyes. At the current stage of her disease, she didn't get to sleep much, and when she did, it was mostly influenced by nightmares and painful visions of her own demise. Occasionally she would be coughing too, traces of blood against her palm as her condition was worsening. Soon the disease would enter its last stage, and from there, as far as Astra knew, there was nothing that could stop an infected from dying. Understanding now why people lost their minds, she was doing her best to hold onto what little sanity she had left. With the light being stolen from her by Aether, and the haunting visions and lack of sleep, it was strange that she hadn't fallen further than she had...
For now, she had sated the worst of her hunger, as she simply headed forwards towards the main city in the district. Perhaps, despite the relatively low odds, there would be something in this area that could guide her towards an answer. If not, perhaps at least she could find more money to support her in entering Shirotsume. Although, considering that when she had attempted to enter the last time, she hadn't been infected, perhaps that deal was off entirely now. Filling her pockets with apples, and refilling her bottle of water at the nearby fountain, Astra continued down the road, still hopeful that she could somehow survive this ordeal.

Astra’s journey would be quite uneventful, even after finally reaching the dinky old village. The village was so small in fact, that she would be able to capture every building in her gaze without having to turn her head in the slightest. “Crabapples!” A man would yell as he dropped a large sack onto the ground. “My foot!” He winced as he began hopping on the spot in agony. He appeared to have stumped his toe against the stone well, which appeared to be the central location of the town. In fact, the closer Astra would look, the more she would notice how all the buildings would cluster around the well with their entrances all pointing towards it.
“Dang nabbit!” The man hissed, the act of which causing some of the villagers to turn their heads in shame. A few had noticed Astra already, though had failed to greet her upon noticing her sickly condition. The village was more than well aware of the virus, such being evident from the handkerchiefs around the lower half of their faces. Still, despite this, the villagers couldn’t help but grow slightly red-faced at the old man’s attitude in the presence of a guest. “Quiet you old fool!” Shouted a lady holding a basket of green fruit. “I apologise for his behaviour… These dark times have left a mark on us all.” Although the woman was making a visible effort to stay as far back from Astra as possible, it was clear that she meant no real disrespect.
“What brings you to our town?” The voice would come from a young boy to Astra’s left. Like the others, he was clad in protective gear such as gloves, a mouth guard and even goggles. He would even go as far as to keep his distance from Astra despite knowing little about her or the virus. Although a carefree child, he had clearly been taught well enough to follow the example of his elders. Despite this, however, he didn’t appear to be as overly cautious of Astra as the others. On the contrary, he seemed almost happy to meet her. Overjoyed even.

It was a good thing small spaces didn't bother Artichoke. Or, apparently, anyone in Kunugi. The huge farms and sprawling fields gave way pretty quickly to a disappointingly tiny farm village. Small as it was, Artichoke was thanking his lucky stars that it seemed to have food, and people willing to trade. "Twice the cloth for the same amount of bread, then."
-Or not so willing.
The third store Artichoke had tried trading at was so tiny that sacks of food brushed against him as he tried to bargain, unsuccessfully, with the shopkeeper. The churning in his stomach was making him desperate, and the couple cabbages he'd nabbed from the farms only did so much, even before hours of walking. He had hoped that reaching the village meant that he would get to trade some of the shoes or supplies for a good amount of food, but it looked like he'd been overly optimistic. Hard as he tried he couldn't help but dissect the incident in Onibas, prying around for something he could have done to have kept the food he'd had. Not followed the will o' wisps, maybe? Running as soon as he could have? The best thing would have been not to have run into the raider girl. The churning in his stomach was putting a hole through his regular, chipper attitude.
A noise was sounding outside, and the shopkeeper turned her head. Artichoke jumped on the opportunity, hoping that a distraction would make her more receptive to trading. "It's a way better deal. So you'll buy, right?" The will o' wisps, invisible for now, were quietly buzzing around his head as he chattered insistently.
The commotion outside sounded again, and the shopkeeper stopped just before her response and turned her irate glare out the door. Artichoke's gaze followed hers. Something was going on, and it wasn't just a passing brush-by. Curious, he poked his head out, hanging halfway out the entrance.
It was the armor that caught his attention before anything else- stark black in the glinting sun. Artichoke's hand went slack against the door frame. It's her: raider lady. The word was out of his mouth before he could process his thoughts, thick with shock "You!"

Coughing deeply, a bunch of blood splattered through her fingers, dripping onto the ground as she staggered on her feet, almost falling over. Gasping, panting for air, she looked around as people were speaking to her. Their voices were only a strange echoing blur, and she wasn't understanding what the others were saying to her. Almost collapsing there on the road for a few moments, she leaned backwards, got a deep breath of air, and pulled herself back into the world, just in time to hear a familiar voice. Looking to her side, it was the fae-boy. While she may have wanted to point out to him how pathetic it was stalking pretty girls, she simply couldn't. Drying her bloodied hand off in the grass outside the village, she seemed like a broken individual on the verge of dying. "Congratulations. Thou have found me. Feel free to gloat. I can't say I care anymore." It took a while after the coughing, with her legs shaking, before she started moving closer to the village. "I... need money to enter Shirotsume. They say they have found the cure. Either thou will help me, or I will burn everything to the ground to find what I desire. Do not test me!" It was clear with the tone of her voice that she wasn't kidding. Although it was highly unlikely in her current condition that she would be able to inflict harm on anyone. It was just a lonely girl, on the road, desperate not to die. So much had been taken and stolen from her, and now all she could express was hatred. So colored in hatred that even her magic had warped to a darker version of her original self. "..Or would it be better if I begged? Because I can beg. I just need those jewels." Astra continued to step forwards, staggering and sweating. Why was she sweating? Why was she so thirsty again? In Astra's mind, if she went down now, there was absolutely no way that she got herself back on her feet, and fighting another mage was absolutely out of the question.

If there was one thing Kunugi could boast having an abundance of, then that would be food. Due to this, most of the traders in the village would have ordinarily jumped at the opportunity to trade with an outsider, even if it meant an unfavourable return for their efforts. In the end what mattered was building relations and of course, there was never going to be a food shortage no matter how much charity they gave out. “Hm…” Mumbled the shopkeeper as she pondered over Artichoke’s offer whilst holding back a snicker. If the rumbling of the teen’s belly didn’t give away his desperation then the shopkeeper most likely would have accepted his offer. Like the villager’s before her, however, she couldn’t help but enjoy the light hearted mischief in toying with the violet-eyed male.“How about thrice-” Before she could even finish her offer, the attention would be on Astra. “Oh… Another one…” She mumbled solemnly, her words clearly being directed at the disease stricken knight. If Artichoke was paying any real attention to the shopkeeper’s mannerisms, then he would be able to take note of the fact that she appeared to be filled with sadness rather than distaste or fear. In fact, unlike most people who would alienate anyone suffering from the Deadly Crow Disease, the entire village appeared to be showing Astra somewhat of a semblance of sympathy despite their cautious behaviour around her.----- The young boy would notice Astra coughing up blood and in response, took a step backwards. He didn’t appear to be scared of Astra, but much rather, simply cautious of her blood. “Dang kids and their violent P-M-S-ing!” Yelled the old man as he brandished a rake in response to Astra’s threats. “Come on Jerry, let’s move along.” The woman would grab the young boy by the arm and drag him away forcibly. She knew full well how dangerous the Deadly Crow Disease made people. “H-Hey!” As much as Jerry struggled, there was no way he was going to overpower someone almost twice his age. “Hey! Dark Knight Girl! If you need work or food ask my Pa, he works in that huge building right past the shops.” It couldn’t be missed. There was only one building in the entire village that was large enough to fit the description. Of course, to get there Astra would first have to deal with Artichoke and a disgruntled old man. “I ain’t letting no war-barbarian see the town Mayor! She goes through me first!”

Artichoke wasn’t much one for thinking before doing, and the intricate, necessary process of carefully picking through options in his head before he did them… sometimes didn't occur to him. He didn't think when he put one foot out of the door, and his mind came to a sudden halt when the woman in armour stumbled to the ground, coughing up blood like tuberculosis had a meaner, bigger brother that had wormed her way into her system. He watched the whole display with dim horror, not moving and barely blinking, until she was up again. He was glad for the space still between them. Right, what was he about to say? 'I wanted my money back, but I'll do it after you're done dying'. Hunger was still panging at him, but it was obvious that demanding anything from a dying person was… wrong. Righteous indignation didn't stand up in the situation. Either way, judging from what she was saying- well, she was either lying, or this whole thing was a strange coincidence. His shoulders slumped from their taught, ready-to-yell position into something more relaxed- Armour Lady didn't look in the state to rob him, one way or another, or interested, and she was more likely to find… help for her illness in town than with him. His heckles were up, the whole thing sent a bad vibe up his spine- but what was to be done? Then she was gone without a pause or another word. He briefly- briefly entertained following her and asking if she was okay, but that would be bad on both their ends, so like a badger sliding back into its hole he slunk back into the shop. When he turned back to the shopkeeper, his eyes were on the ceiling, pinching the skin at the tip of his neck. The whole thing was giving him strange vibes. He just managed to hear the end of her words. "Another one?" He echoed, eyes meeting hers in confusion. She didn't look grossed out, and- well, if they'd had so many sick people around, why didn't they look more… affected? "I've been to Onibas. It was a wreck after that Deadly Crow deal. Aren't you all more…" He looked out the door one more time, briefly, to see if there was still a blood stain, and caught sight of the well in the middle of the town. The corners of his mouth tugged down. "…worried about it?"

Gasping for air as she was challenged by the old man, she could hardly see him at this point in time. Staggering forwards, there was a grim smile on her lips. Raising her arm and pointing it at the old man, she was muttering something under her breath. It was so distorted that she couldn't be properly understood. A mere moment after, her hand slid around to her back to unhook something. Withdrawing it slowly, it was a long, dark spear. Pointing it threatheningly against the man, it was clear that she wanted him to move over so that she could pass. Although she was being rather hostile, she currently wasn't attacking. Within her own vision, the man was blurred out. Sweat from her face was pouring into her eyes and dripping from her chin, as the overpowering heat of wearing armor and being in the beat of the sun wore her down. Combined with the fever from her sickness, she wasn't faring too well. There, she slowly sank to her knees, struggling to remain standing, holding onto her spear that was placed with the backend into the ground to give her some support. There were tears in her eyes, as tremors were echoing through her body. "..p-please.." It was the begging that she had spoke of earlier. Astra was absolutely desperate, as she simply slumped sideways onto the ground with a metallic clank as armor impacted against stone. Lying flat on the ground, she was blinking a couple of times. The prestine white hair was greasy from the sweat, and scattered across the ground. The Valkyrie was down, and the referee was counting...
It wasn't that she was completely incapacitated, nor that she would be unable to spring into action for a short period if she needed to. It was that the burden on her shoulders had grown so heavy that she needed a little time to breathe. Unfortunately that meant on the ground, helplessly.

The shopkeeper scratched her head at the young boy’s antics. Not only had the bartering ceased, but the boy was now blocking her view of the infected girl. “How rude!” She grumbled. However, before the opportunity to hold a grudge could arise, Artichoke would steer the conversation into a different direction. “Of course we are not worried silly.” The girl looked amused. “Why should we be worried?” The words gave little away and only invited more questions. Before Artichoke could press the subject any further, however, the shopkeeper would simply dismiss the topic with a wave of her hand.“Come now, surely you didn’t come all this way to discuss such morbid topics.” The shopkeeper had an oddly light-hearted tone about the situation. Of course, there was little denying that she felt visible sorrow for Astra’s condition. At the same time, however, there was no trace of fear or worry on her expression. “I’ll accept your trade if you throw in a little something to sweeten the pot.” She would even go as far as to wink and giggle slightly in order to convince Artichoke into accepting the trade in a manner that went highly against the tense situation.----- “Y-You dang whippersnapper!” The old man was visibly afraid of Astra and would even go as far as to take several steps back as she staggered forwards. “S-Speak up!” He stuttered, clearly unsure of what Astra had just murmured under her breath due to a combination of poor hearing and the manner in which the words left Astra’s lips. “H-Hold up now!” The rake-wielding elder would breakdown as the armoured girl drew her spear. If Astra couldn’t make out the man’s shivering before, then now it would be more than visible even to her blurred vision. “H-Help!” He cried out in fear of his safety. He had misjudged the youngster’s conviction.“S-Someone! H-Help!” Before anyone could respond to the pleas, Astra would already be down for the count. “Ha!” Scoffed the old man as he began dancing victoriously in a manner that would harshly contrast his frail and aged body. “I did it! Kehehe, ain’t no snot nosed kid ever going to get the best of John Itus!” The man at this point was far more focused on declaring his victory to the world than Astra, though he would take the time to check on her after several moments of undeserved gloating. “Hey youngster. I admire ye for having the guts to fight me. It was a long and difficult match, I’ll give ye that. But! Ultimately! You fell before I, John Itus of Kunugi.” After the speech, the man would put down his so called ‘weapon’ and limp over to Astra. “Now look here young 'un. If it is jewels that ye seek… I just may have a job for ye. But I feel bad asking something from a sickie…”

The shopkeeper's lack of concern was reaching strange levels. Artichoke didn't like to dwell on bad things- well, not usually- but in somewhere so small and unguarded it didn't seem safe to let sick people roam everywhere. In the end, he chalked it up as a Kunugi thing. Or many a Fiore thing. Maybe they were just too upbeat to talk about their problems, and would try to send the woman somewhere else later. With that internally settled, a trade was a trade. Artichoke slackened his face into something less troubled. "Sweeten the pot? I haven't heard that one in a while." He considered for a moment. What else did he have that was trade-worthy? "How about-""Help! Someone help!"A voice cut into the start of his new offer. Artie's pack was slung across his back between 'some' and 'one', and he was out the door. Briefly he turned back to the shopkeeper, to assure that the trading wasn't done. "-I come back later. Bye!"He made it to the square just in time to see the end of a scene. A fragile looking old man, holding a rake and in the middle of something that looked like a dance. He was standing a little away from the woman from earlier. Artichoke visibly paled at her state. She was on the floor, sweating, eyes barely open. Before he could do anything, Old Man, a.k.a John Itus of Kunugi dove into a celebratory speech, declaring himself a victor and boasting about a match. With a job offer tacked on at the end so confidently that he had to wonder if he was hallucinating the woman. Artichoke stood in stock confusion for a half-second, before his thoughts told him pretty clearly that it was probably the disease, not this old guy, who knocked out the raider woman. A few sprawling steps closer to them, Artichoke subtly declared his entrance with a cough that was about two volumes too loud to be casual. He got down, a couple feet away from the woman, to make a visual check of whether she was breathing and then took a shuffle back when his head reminded him too close, you'll get sick. She was, so, sucking in a breath, he turned to John Itus. "How about from me?" Armor Lady shades worse than yesterday, and that was an accomplishment. If she thought she needed jewels, Artichoke could contribute something. Something was probably better than letting he die. That was only if both of them were willing to bite. "I… know her?" It came out as more of a question than a statement. "And we could split the task. If she doesn't… if she's up for it!" Hastily, he reached into his pack to pull out a scarf and covered his hand, which he offered to her. It was embarrassing how long he'd neglected the near-dead girl. "Oh, here! Are you okay?" No telling she wouldn't just pull him down, with all the armour, but it was worth a shot.

Closing her eyes, it seemed that the old man wasn't willing to help her, nor do anything positive to assist with her dire situation. Instead, he was hopping around like some loonatic, apparently proud that he had conquered the Valkyrie in battle. What a lying, smug asshole. It was curious how pathetic these humans were. A mere minute ago he had been just about to throw himself on his knees to beg the Valkyrie to spare his life. Now, when he had the opportunity, he was riddiculing and dishonoring her. Humans really were the worst. There were so few amongst them with redeeming qualities in this age. It had been different back when honor and war was something everyone needed to have a stance to. Not like today where each and everyones greatest interest was themselves and their own fortune. Coughing lowly, she placed her hands underneath her chest in a feeble attempt to get herself back on her feet. The failure in the situation must've been humorous. The whole commotion was drawing even more attention to the downed Valkyrie, who at this point seemed to have given up on living. There was too much pain and suffering going on for her to have any hope for the future. Death was coming for her soon, and the least painful way out seemed to be simply withering away in the sun. Mere moments later, she would've sunk completely into unconciousness, if it wasn't for the fact that the annoying little brat from earlier had returned. The boy exchanged a couple of words with the old man. Was he really going there simply to steal the only job Astra had been able to procure in the past week?! The attempt to get on her feet stopped, as she once again laid flat on the ground. Cursing lowly at her fate, there were so many things she had wanted to do, but it all seemed pointless...
...Right until the nosy brat shoved his scarf-covered hand towards her face. Peering up at him, it took a few moments before she stretched her armored hand out to grab hold and allow him to assist in pulling her to her feet. Once up, she didn't take a moment to thank Artichoke. Instead, she staggered on, towards the well. After a few moments of struggling, she had pulled up a bucket filled to the brim with water, which she then proceeded to pour over herself to cool her down. The disease was causing the fever, and she was sweating fiercely. The water was cooling her down, giving her some much needed refreshment. "A-aah.." Astra spoke softly, leaning against the well as she still somewhat wobbly on her feet turned to look at the old man and youngster. "...A job sounds nice. Lord knows I could use any jewel you could spare.. Or I doubt I will last much longer than a couple of days.." Astra spoke softly. If Artichoke wanted to help, that was fine. At this point it wasn't like she would deny assistance.

“Yes?” The shopkeeper pressed for an answer despite the noise. However, as much as she tried, she would simply fail to grab Artichoke’s attention. “O-Okay! But hurry back!” The shopkeeper would even go as far as to pout before blowing a raspberry at the boy as he exited the shop. She clearly was not impressed with the manners of her customer, though in the grand scheme of things, it didn’t look as if she was the type to hold a grudge anyway. ----- “Reinforcements!” Old man John would glare as Artichoke came into view. “Another youngster!” John would waste no time in retreating to fetch his rake as Artichoke coughed. It almost seemed as if the old man was expecting the newcomer to begin coughing up fire or something. “You wish to help…?” John seemed confused. The boy had yet to prove his worth in battle, however, the knight’s behaviour possibly hinted at the fact that the two were at the very least acquaintances of some sort. Artichoke’s later comment would even go as far as to confirm that fact. “Well… I can’t be flinging my Jewels in all directions y’know?”John would scratch his head and drop his rake once more after contemplating for several seconds. “Fine! Fine! I ain’t paying for two moochers though. Ye can divvy up the prize money between yerselves. I want no part in the deciding.” John was a careful man. He wanted to cover all his bases just in case either of the duo were not happy with a fifty-fifty share in the rewards. “Right young 'un’s, I need ye to talk to the mayor. He seems rather down in the dumps lately if ye see what I mean…” The expression on John’s face would shift from light heartedness to something else. Something darker. “That boy hasn’t been right in the head since this outbreak. Talk some sense into the lad and ye will have the gratitude of Kun- H-HEY! PUT THAT DOWN!” The old man would cut himself off as he noticed Astra reaching for the well. Before Astra could be stopped, she would have already drenched herself in water, at which point she would feel numerous small objects pelting against her forehead. “Ruffian! Put those back!” John would grow red faced. If anyone looked closely, they would see numerous small coins scattered around Astra. “That be the towns wishing well! Not some drinking fountain!”

WORDS: | 000 | TAGGED: | Kitty Kat Astra | NOTES: | WAY TOO LONG A WAIT FOR FILLER- SORRY! |
| Without thanks, the woman walked away. Artichoke felt like a petulant child, wanting to puff out his cheeks. He settled for folding his arms dramatically. It wouldn’t hurt to be… you know, thankful. The woman, with her fancy armor- well, he assumed she was some sort of noble, but looking at her he was starting to wonder otherwise. The nobles in Fiore had a certain way about them; hoity toity, and super polite. When he had just came they seemed alien. If it weren’t for how they fit, he would have guessed that she’d stolen her clothes, and was going about living in someone else’s armor.
He was starting to wonder if working with her would be the best thing idea. Maybe he should back out. There was no guarantee that working with her wouldn’t end with him diseased, and it could. He was quick to forgive, it seemed, but not entirely suicidal. Yep, he would definitely back out. She was up and walking towards the well, so clearly fine enough that she could make it without his help. If she didn’t- well, the people of Kunugi seemed helpful enough that they should do something more, at least.
He turned to Otis, crumpling the handkerchief so that the used side was inside. He would hear the old Otis out before he dismissed himself, though. Just to be polite. He listened as the old man got to talking, and found himself caught up in it anyway. Even for half of normal pay, he could talk to someone down in the dumps. Sure, the company wouldn't be great, but... He was so alert that Otis’ sudden yelling had sent a shock through him.
Artichoke nearly jumped a foot in the air, and blinked down. The old man was clearly pissed. It was almost funny, loathe as he was to say it- he looked like a little gnome, yelling himself red. It was such a funny sight that it took a moment for him to actually look towards the woman, showering herself in well water. Coin-loaded well water, and he registered what Otis had said.
He blinked. Wishing well. It was enough to grab anyone’s attention, and definitely Artichoke’s. He had a few wishes he could think of. “Wait wait wait. You have a well here that actually grants wishes?” His eyes lit up, and he turned to the woman. He could think of a million and one wishes. A certain forest was something that came to mind, for sure.
