Inside the courtyard of the dilapidated Castle Ruins, Battler stood around and surveyed the place, making sure there were no hostile wildlife or creatures lurking around. It was an overcast day so not much sunlight around, and the air was somewhat cold. There was little to no wind to speak of. Deciding this was a suitable place to start his training with Sakura, the red haired man took out his sword and used it to warm up as he made a few practice swings to check his current conditions. His grip was good, and he felt well enough. The area around him was enough that a sparring match could be done while utilizing the ruins and rubble as a means of real combat situations where one had to adapt to their surroundings.
"Time to get some practice in. It's been three long years and neither of us know each other's strengths and weaknesses. Time to learn them the hard way. That said, I can't do any magic. You could say its got a nasty rebound."
Saying this Battler, turned to his companion that was tagging along with him. With his sword in hand, he rested it to his side parallel to the ground with one hand. He was looking forward to this battle since he hadn't had a good spar with another humanoid in quite some time. He had no doubt gotten rusty over his time hunting beasts. Comparing combat between a beast and a human was like comparing dinner and desert.
"Only one rule for this sparring match. No magic. No death is also obvious, in case you are wondering. Your move."
Battler tended to be the defensive combatant who watched the other move and analyzed their magic and tactics before using his own to counter them. One could either use another's tactics against them, or strive to improve their own. He would always choose the former.

The wind blew through Sakura's hair as she stood before the castle ruins. Before, this place was beautiful. It was covered in glorious gardens and happy servants. But now it was all gone. Acres of fallen rock and dust stretched out before her, a tribute to the once-strong governor of Adonis town. He was gone, but his building's rubble remained. There was nothing but rolling green grass and piles of rock. It would be difficult to rebuild it-- much like it would be difficult to rebuild Adonis Village.
Sakura turned to face Battler.
"Close combat is not my specialty." She sighed, sliding her folding scythe out from her sleeve. The magical blade appeared from the top, revealing itself with a distinct zing. "But very well. It is necessary to learn how to fight without magic, in the event that it is not present." She swung the scythe around her, creating a streak of purple as the glow of the blade was too fast to follow.
"I agree to your terms. Let us begin." She ran towards him, her scythe stretched out in one hand.

Seeing the straight on attack, Battler waited until the last second to dodge by lowering his body until he was practically parallel to the ground and kicking forward to dash past her, performing a dodge roll. A scythe had a long reach and could effectively strike anything that was in its swung direction, perfect for hunting down a dodging or retreating opponent. Battler himself wasn't that skillful with his weapon, but the tactics and experience he had gained from real combat was enough to make up for his lack of training.
Instead of getting up straight away, Battler kicked off the ground once more but to the side this time, raising his weapon in front with a firm grip but loose arm so that if struck, he could deflect rather than straight on block a weapon which could easily use its weight to push him off balance or reach around his weapon while he was guarding. Backstepping several times, he attempted to keep some different from his opponent so that he could continue observing his target.

Sakura was not surprised by his easy dodge. Her first attack had not been a strong one. It was more of judging attack. How well could he react? How would he react? Those were the questions Sakura was answering with her first attack. It seemed that Battler was quick enough. She had known he was a decent fighter before he left for three years, but never to this extent. This was her first time raising her weapon towards in in friendly fire.
Sakura followed through with her slice, turning in a complete circle to come again for another slice as Battler got up. He raised his weapon diagonally, the scythe and sword connecting with a loud clang. Sakura reversed her direction to unhinge her weapon, and took several steps backwards just as Battler did. They were about ten feet away from each other now. Sakura lunged forward and sliced again, aiming for his torso.

Gaining enough distance, Battler observed and waited for his opponent to come to him. Smiling as Sakura did so, he decided to confuse her. How? As the attack came for his chest, he instead lunged with his blade, thrusting it forward. Except, he let go of it and let it fly out of his hands towards his target. At that distance, it would be noticeable but unexpected. So he followed it up by lowering his body close to the ground and dashed forward, left hand open palm and right hand closed fist. With both hands at his side, he charged forward and brought his left hand forward as if drawing back for a punch with his right.
Instead, his charge came to a halt as his left hand suddenly shot forward as the striking hand instead, directed at his opponent's flank followed by a roundhouse kick to the same side before performing a backflip until he reached his previous standing location. "Don't rely on a single means of attack. Eyes out for deceit. Consider everything that your opponent is doing. The entire body is a weapon, and a weapon is just an attachment or decoration in the end." Finishing his friendly tip, Battler lowered his hips, spread his legs with left foot forward, both hands open palmed pointed in Sakura's direction with left hand extended elbow bent, and right hand still close to his chest, ready to strike again.

Sakura was not one so easily fooled. She noticed when Battler threw his sword and quickly stepped to one side as the blade flew past her. She continued to slice with her scythe, but Battler ducked under the blade and out of the sharp edge's reach. Sakura followed through and stopped when she was facing her opponent again. By the time this had all happened, the two had switched places on the field.
Sakura faced him again, observing what he would do next. One hand was closed in a fist, ready to punch, while the other was open. She wondered if he intended to bitch-slap her. As he drew back both of his arms, Sakura swung downwards with her staff, knocking both of his hands downwards and then raising it back up to deflect his kick upwards. He flipped over her and the two were back in their starting positions.
"To be honest, I don't think I'll ever be using a weapon to fight, anyways. My shadows are enough." She stopped supplying magic energy into her blade, causing the red plasma-like knife to flicker and then fade away. She folded up the staff and slipped it back up her sleeve. "That's enough for today. We should head back." She turned her back on him and started to walk away.
